Thank you for your comments. The »verweile doch" is a little more complicated. Goethe writes: "Will I say to the moment: / Stay but a while! You are so beautiful! / Then you may beat me in fetters, Then I will gladly perish!" (V 1699-1702) This is not a longing for standstill, but the insight that standstill means death. If I have understood you correctly, you have understood that. I am pleased that my thoughts about Faust have been allowed to stimulate your thoughts. Thanks for that.

I met Goethe and Faust in 1958, when I was 19 years old, and I was thrilled by "verveile doch - du bist so schõn". It has followed me through life since then, allways wondering if there comes a moment when I would want everything in my life to "freeze" in a moment of happiness an fulfilment. I have actually experienced several moments of that kind, joy and satisfaction so deep and. overwhelming that I thought there would be nothing better. I have uttered "Verveile doch...." and nothing happend, exept that life continued.... That is the point I think: You can produce a still photo, but life is dynamic, and I think it is impossible to leave the dynamics of life as long as you breathe....
